About 1,000 pro-democracy protestors were rounded up in Nepal as they clashed with riot police and damaged vehicles in different parts of capital Kathmandu on Friday, the 16th day of agitation by five major political parties. Six trucks used by the police to arrest protestors were damaged as agitators clashed with cops in Putalisadak and Baghbazaar in Kathmandu.Police also resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the agitators in some areas. Thousands of agitators, defying government ban on public gatherings in the capital, assembled at Bhotahity, Ratnapark and Baghbazaar demanding formation of an all-party government and restoration of full-fledged democracy. The police arrested over 1,000 demonstrators belonging to the five major parties who staged sit-in and took out rallies chanting anti-King slogans. Among the arrested were MPs Mahesh Mani Dixit and Ashok Koirala of Nepal Communist Party-UML, Nepali Congress leaders Haribol Bhattarai and Shanker Pandey, Nepal Sadbhavana Party leaders Dilip Kumar Singh and Raj Narayan Shah. |
